Can You Eat or Drink With Clear Retainers?
Learn when to remove clear retainers for meals and coffee, how to keep them safe away from home, and what to check before ordering a replacement.
Take removable clear retainers out before eating, and remove them for drinks other than plain water unless your orthodontist has given you different instructions. Coffee, meals and snacks are easier to manage when your retainer case is already within reach.
This guide is for removable clear retainers, not bonded wires or active aligner treatment. Follow your own wear schedule and the care instructions supplied with your retainers.
What about coffee, tea and other drinks?
The American Association of Orthodontists advises avoiding colored, sugary or acidic drinks while wearing clear retainers. That includes coffee, tea, wine, soda and juice. Water is the exception in its general guidance. See the AAO’s retainer care advice.
A useful daily habit is to pair your coffee cup with your case: set the case beside your bag before breakfast, then bring it with you. If you wear your retainers only at night, take them out before your morning meal as directed in your wear plan.
A simple routine for meals away from home
- Before leaving: pack your case where you can find it without emptying your bag.
- Before eating: remove your retainers and put them directly in their case. Avoid wrapping them in a napkin, which can easily get thrown away.
- After the meal: follow your prescribed oral-hygiene and retainer-cleaning routine before resuming wear.
- Before leaving the table: check that your case is back in your bag.
For example, keep your case in the same zipped pocket as your keys rather than moving it between a coat, desk drawer and lunch bag. The point is to give it one predictable home, so a change in plans does not become a search for missing retainers.
For a longer trip, use our retainer packing checklist. For cleaning steps, read how to clean clear retainers and check the instructions for your specific product.
What if you accidentally eat with them in?
Remove and check your retainers. If they look damaged, feel different or no longer fit, contact your orthodontist for advice rather than trying to reshape them yourself. Do not use hot water to alter the fit.
If the problem is a missing retainer instead, our lost-retainer guide explains the next steps. A restaurant napkin, lunch tray or hotel breakfast table is a good reason to make the case part of your routine before anything goes missing.
Planning a replacement?
Mavira offers custom clear retainers made from impressions taken at home. One upper-and-lower set is currently $120 and includes a travel case. Check the product page for current options and care information before ordering.
Replacement retainers maintain tooth position; they are not a treatment for straightening teeth. If your teeth have moved or you are unsure about the fit, get advice from your orthodontist before choosing a replacement.
